We’ve managed to pick up quite a few of these now. This one is listed as a “micro” – but I’d personally call it a small cache because, despite the size of the container – there was room for a few small swaps – and of course, the Monopoly card itself.

Wolfie lands on Regent Street. Rent Owed.

This was a nice, handy, and relatively straightforward cache. There’s even a freeway exit for both north and southbound access very close by – so a great “park-and-grab” style geocache for anyone traveling between Sydney and Newcastle.

Thanks for the cache!

Despite it being a quiet Sunday morning, I felt very conspicuous looking for this one, clambering around parked cars, looking up in trees and street sign posts.

After a good solid 20 minute search I gave up.

The three seekers before me also had no luck finding this, so I do wonder if the cache is still available.

My work as a train driver is unique, in that it often gives me some spare downtime to go geocaching. Being based in central Sydney, I’m pretty much always guaranteed there will be some caches within walking distance.

Today I made my way over to Electric Harmony (GCZE72) and found this urban micro by Us Mob reasonably quickly. The key to these I guess is timing – early Sunday morning is a great time to go to those usually busy places to pick up cache and avoid the muggles.

Thanks for the cache. I quite enjoy the challenge of these urban micros.

With 72 cache finds under our belt, TeamWolfie has decided it’s probably time we should give a little back to the geocaching community and make a few more hides of our own. We figured we’d try a sneaky micro in a location fairly close to home.

Cathargo Caught (GC1KR2B) is located just outside one of Gosford’s original apartment unit complexes – nestled in the foothills of Rumbalara Reserve. The name will make a lot more sense to all those who visit this cache location.

A word of advice if you intend to go on the hunt for this cache: there is no need to enter the private property. The property boundary is marked by a white surveyor’s peg on the “letterbox” side of the driveway (near palm tree). If you extend an imaginary line perpendicular across the driveway from that wooden peg, this is the property boundary – and there is no need to cross this line. If you pass the letterboxes, you have gone too far.

Parking is strictly not permitted on the private property.

This is a rather sneaky micro, made more-so difficult by an intermittent stream of resident muggles coming and going. Take care when searching, and beware of spiders.

Geocaching is a 24 hour activity, so anytime is a good time to go caching. Such was the case on my early morning drive to work this morning, stopping to pick up a handy micro-cache near one of the roadways on my route to work.

I’d actually been meaning for a while to have a go at this cache – it was just a case of waiting for a rare time where I was running a little early for work and had 5 or so minutes to spare.

The Stairway to Deafen (GCX5RE) micro geocache by zebrafive is in located in the backstreets of Sydney’s Darling Harbour precinct. I’d already used my iPhone and Google street view to “case” the general area in my spare time at work in recent days, so it was now time to put my research into action.

They all climbed the Stairway to Deafen

Turned out this was a very quick park and grab. The cache hint gave me a very good idea of where to sit and feel, and I’d located it in under 30 seconds.

Signed the log, and quickly returned to the car, and yes… I just made it to work on time. Thanks zebrafive for another good one in a sneaky spot!

Despite an abundance of muggles, we were determined to find this but unfortunately we left empty-handed after an awkward 15 minute hunt in all the little holes and not finding the cache. Even despite reading the hint, and looking in so many of the apparent places, it just didn’t want to make itself known to us today.

Woodbury’s Inn (GCRVE2) is a geocache by Shifter Brains located at a historic site located just to the west of Wyong township. The plaque on the monument here provides an excellent description of what Woodbury’s Inn was – the monument itself being located in the middle of the foundations of what little remains of this building.

It’s a popular park on weekends – it seems to be a popular picnic place, as well as a convenient meeting place for groups before they set off on adventures and tours in the nearby forest or country side. For this reason, it can be hard to get this park all to yourself. This was in fact the fourth time we had driven past here – every other time, the park being busy with muggles.

This micro-cache took a bit of hunting to find. We’d already looked in the right spot, but obviously just not hard enough. Then we looked elsewhere, but ended up back at the first place we searched – this time searching a little harder and prodding a little deeper, and at another angle.

Braving the spider webs, I got my fingers rattling on something that felt like it could be something unusual. The issue then was getting the damned thing out. I wiggled it and wriggled it, and poked it and prodded it. Finally I got it at the right angle to come out of its very well concealed place.

Signed the log, and returned the cache. So pleased with ourselves, that we totally forgot to take a photo to commemorate the find – so you’ll just have to use your imagination – picture a stuffed toy dog, sitting in a park having a picnic, and you’ll get the idea.

Thanks again Shifter Brians for another of your clever caches.

TeamWolfie was hungry – and there’s no better place to feed two hungry geocaching wolves than a famous eatery on the old Pacific Highway that serves a delicious range of pies, and they are atop a mountain with a great view, and to top off a perfect lunch – a micro cache awaits us in their car park.

F3 Futility – Pie in the Sky (GC19236) is the first of stubby holder’s caches we have encountered – and if this is the indication of the quality and thought stubby holder puts into all his/her caches, then we are really looking forward to finding a few more of them.

Being Sunday lunchtime this place was packed. Always very popular with bikers and tourists alike, but we managed to find a parking spot on the grass fairly close to ground zero.

But first things first – let’s eat. Surprisingly, getting a seat was a relatively easy process, and we woofed down 2 pies each and washed them down with a couple of bottles of the popular Bundaberg Ginger Beer before heading back to the car to plan our hunt. Thankfully even though this is a very popular place, the cache location is away from most of the activities, although we still had to be discrete and mindful not to be spotted by muggles in our search.

GZ lead us to the fence in a fairly sparse area with limited options for a cache hide, and if it weren’t for the fact I had seen this type of cache design on an American geocaching video podcast recently, there is every possibility I would never have discovered this cache.

This was a very clever and well designed custom-made cache. We made sure muggles could not see us take the cache, and took it over to the car where we signed the log and examined its design in amazement.

The tricky part was taking it back – with groups of people coming and going, we had to choose our timing just right. Thankfully it was small enough to conceal while carrying, so it was just a case of waiting for the right time to return it to its home, which we did soon enough.

Smile for the muggles, Wolfie!

Not so lucky were we when we were taking a our trademark Wolfie picture of our dog (above). While I was taking this shot I didn’t realise a car load of muggles turned up and one of the older men in the car was pointing and laughing at me, obviously bemused by the fact that a grown man was taking a photograph of a stuffed dog.

Well, I guess the dog distracts attention away from the cache itself – and that’s the important thing in these cases. He’s our dog – and we love him.

Thanks again stubby holder for a fantastic cache.

A couple more kilometres further up the road from FeO is our next attempted find – a geocache by COD called The Buck Stops Here (GCPM2Q). We’d hoped this would be a quick-and-easy find, and by some accounts in the logs it seemed quick-and-easy for some.

Being mindful of it being in a residential area, the roadway is getting busier, and being parked in a no-parking zone we didn’t want to spend too long here. To make matters worse, during our seeking a taxi pulled up to drop off someone at the house directly at the cache location.

Sadly, we left without a find this time. Given this cache is a 3.5 difficulty-rating, we can take some consolation this was not meant to be an “easy” find! We’ll probably return soon to give the area another going-over.

FeO (GCR7VB) is another of the Shifter Brains geocache hides, this being a micro in the West Gosford area. On our way here we drove past one of our earlier finds – Thunder of the Guns II, and had a laugh to ourselves as we drove past and spotted a middle-aged lady climbing around on the gun looking for the cache.

FeO is a strangely named cache. Not sure of the significance of the name – it might have something to do with the type of old truck it’s mounted on, or the business it’s promoting. We were too busy looking for the cache to worry about it’s strange name.

It took us about 20 minutes of pretty solid searching. In the end we found the cache in a spot where we were positive we’d already checked over. But it was a good feeling anyway to get this one out of the way – it’s an industrial area with high muggle activity, and the area was becoming increasingly busy despite the early hour.

Interestingly, while searching we inadvertently found a couple of other items of interest “hidden” on the truck – but we returned these without disturbing them. We were only interested in signing that little log book and moving on to the next find. TFTC.
