We dropped in at Twins South today on our way back from the beach – thus completing the two “twins” geocaches in this area at the twin service centres on the F3 freeway near Wyong, and to give us our 80th cache find. Twins South (GC131DC) is a geocache by the bower birds is so-named after the service station / truckstop along the busy F3 freeway on the NSW Central Coast – there’s a big Caltex service station on both sides of the freeway, known by the locals as the “Twin” service centres.

This was to be our one and only cache attempt for the day after a relaxing morning at the beach. We parked our geo-mobile near the McDonald’s and headed across the vast expanse of the truck parking area, down into the bushland adjacent to the noisy truckstop, where the cache was indicated to be resting.

Being guided by our GPSr, after only a few minutes of prodding around in the scrub we had a fix on the cache, which was placed in a rather obvious spot and covered up in a way that makes it stand out to your average geocacher who has attained a moderate degree of geosense.

Wolfie hanging around the F3 southbound Truckstop

The cache was in great condition, and contained a “Here I Come!!!” coin by the geocoinclub.com – which we took with us and will soon be placing into another cache. We left behind a small coloured “Jack” (some funny-shaped little brightly coloured object that really serves no purpose).

Thanks for another great hide bower birds, I guess that completes both twins for TeamWolfie!

It’s near a van park / mobile home village / prefab home village – and being Australia Day, there was an abundance of muggles about enjoying their day off and celebrating. We surveyed the location a little and discovered a small footbridge leading us across to the correct side of a small creek, but only to be put-off by a “NO ACCESS” sign, and fencing – apparently the bushland here is regenerating.

We’ll come back another day soon to have another go at this – it looks like it could be a lovely secret location.

What better way to spend Australia Day than to go out for a spot of geocaching on the scenic Central Coast. Our first stop today was northbound on the F3 freeway where we visited Twins North (GC131DA) – a medium sized cache by the bower birds.

Twins North is so-called because it is near one of the two (twin) service centres on the F3 near Wyong – this being the one servicing the northbound traffic. It is a popular place for truck drivers to stop and have a rest – with there being ample parking for trucks.

A little homework was required for us to inconspicuously leave the car vehicle area and plan our way across the vast expanse of the truck parking area to the track that was to lead us down to the cache.

Power Wolf

Before too long we closed in on GZ and walked in circles a few times, sniffing out for the cache until one of us eventually spotted it in fairly plain and easy sight. We must have looked right at it a few times – always seems to be the way!

Diesel Dog

On our way back to the car, Wolfie wanted to get his photo taken sitting on one of the truck trailers parked nearby – so we got this great shot of the little fella.

Time to continue our caching expedition.

Today I made my way over to Electric Harmony (GCZE72) and found this urban micro by Us Mob reasonably quickly. The key to these I guess is timing – early Sunday morning is a great time to go to those usually busy places to pick up cache and avoid the muggles.

TeamWolfie strikes again in inner Sydney

Thanks for the cache. I quite enjoy the challenge of these urban micros.

TeamWolfie pushed our geocaching geographical boundaries northward today whilst on a visit to see my dad for his birthday. After lunching at Tea Gardens we headed back and I thought I’d show my dad and his wife what geocaching is about on a visit to the Station Creek Rest Area (GC128GX), a cache by outdoorbloke, located on the Pacific Highway near the Tea Gardens Road turnoff.

It all went as planned, being a nice easy find. There were a few muggles around a the rest area but they were too busy worrying about their toilet stop to be too concerned with us trampling through the shrubs on the side of the road. The cache was sited relatively quickly – and I had to explain to our friends that geocaching is rarely this straightforward.

Wolfie with the cache container

The container had a few small swaps inside – we swapped a red gem for a “fuzzy purple creature” (honestly, I don’t know what else to call it), signed the log book, and replaced the cache in it’s little hiding place.

Thanks to outdoorbloke for a nice straightforward find and a great way to introduce my dad to what geocaching is all about.

With 72 cache finds under our belt, TeamWolfie has decided it’s probably time we should give a little back to the geocaching community and make a few more hides of our own. We figured we’d try a sneaky micro in a location fairly close to home.

Cathargo Caught (GC1KR2B) is located just outside one of Gosford’s original apartment unit complexes – nestled in the foothills of Rumbalara Reserve. The name will make a lot more sense to all those who visit this cache location.

A word of advice if you intend to go on the hunt for this cache: there is no need to enter the private property. The property boundary is marked by a white surveyor’s peg on the “letterbox” side of the driveway (near palm tree). If you extend an imaginary line perpendicular across the driveway from that wooden peg, this is the property boundary – and there is no need to cross this line. If you pass the letterboxes, you have gone too far.

Parking is strictly not permitted on the private property.

This is a rather sneaky micro, made more-so difficult by an intermittent stream of resident muggles coming and going. Take care when searching, and beware of spiders.

Despite an abundance of muggles, we were determined to find this but unfortunately we left empty-handed after an awkward 15 minute hunt in all the little holes and not finding the cache.

We like the number 6, so why end the day on 65 when we can end on 66 – especially when driving right past a geocache which looks like it’s a promising easy park-and-grab.

Gosford Gateway (GCT91B) by Shifter Brains is located at a spot that you’d call the northern gateway into the Gosford City council area, alongside the Pacific Highway. With the aid of the hint, TeamWolfie found the small-cache fairly quickly, although it was being “guarded” by a large tan-coloured lizard at first.

Gateway to Wolfie's Home

Thankfully you can search for this cache fairly discretely – even in spite of the busy passing traffic, so don’t let its location put you off. We were able to park alongside the site and have relatively good privacy while we searched.

We quickly signed the cache and returned it. The hardest part was actually waiting for a break in the traffic to take the picture without looking like an idiot.

66 caches down, 6 for the day, and a great start to 2009.

Woodbury’s Inn (GCRVE2) is a geocache by Shifter Brains located at a historic site located just to the west of Wyong township. The plaque on the monument here provides an excellent description of what Woodbury’s Inn was – the monument itself being located in the middle of the foundations of what little remains of this building.

It’s a popular park on weekends – it seems to be a popular picnic place, as well as a convenient meeting place for groups before they set off on adventures and tours in the nearby forest or country side. For this reason, it can be hard to get this park all to yourself. This was in fact the fourth time we had driven past here – every other time, the park being busy with muggles.

This micro-cache took a bit of hunting to find. We’d already looked in the right spot, but obviously just not hard enough. Then we looked elsewhere, but ended up back at the first place we searched – this time searching a little harder and prodding a little deeper, and at another angle.

Braving the spider webs, I got my fingers rattling on something that felt like it could be something unusual. The issue then was getting the damned thing out. I wiggled it and wriggled it, and poked it and prodded it. Finally I got it at the right angle to come out of its very well concealed place.

Signed the log, and returned the cache. So pleased with ourselves, that we totally forgot to take a photo to commemorate the find – so you’ll just have to use your imagination – picture a stuffed toy dog, sitting in a park having a picnic, and you’ll get the idea.

Thanks again Shifter Brians for another of your clever caches.

We approached GZ after a short drive down Scaddens Ridge Road, with a minor detour just at the cache location that also acts as a safe parking area. The cache had us stumped for a little bit while our GPSr danced around, but before long we were onto it and the cache was in our paws. Not too easy, not too hard – just right!

We love these sensible geocache containers that Shifter Brains use. They obviously love their SPC fruit, and these containers make for an excellent geocache in the right location, especially when camouflaged.

While signing the log book a muggle drove by – but thankfully too quickly to notice the team squatting in the undergrowth doing our suspicious activities. We quickly returned the cache after signing and left the area before the muggle returned.

Thanks again for another cache Shifter Brains – you’re keeping us busy, and we like it.
